About Huang Gang

Huang Gang was born in 1961 in Beijing and spent his childhood and adolescent years amid the turmoil of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Through his parents he was influenced and exposed to the finest aspects of traditional Chinese Art along with studying Chinese painting and calligraphy. In 1984 he graduated from the Central Academy of Art and Design in Beijing. His early paintings centered on the theme of Chinese Calligraphy. What one can find in his work is the harmonious, moderate, free expression and poetic passion.

From the late 1980s and the 1990s, Tibetan themes became a very popular source of artistic creation in China. During this time Huang Gang developed a lively interest in Tibetan culture, religion, art and began collecting classical Tibetan artifacts. His art entered a new phase by using these artifacts in his artwork like woodblocks written in Tibetan language. He employs an artistic method to read the differences, contradictions and conflicts between traditional philosophy and modern civilization and creates a dialogue between them. The five stars represent revolution, violence and passion, while the artifacts or woodblocks show the practice of spiritual cultivation.

In recent years, Huang Gang has exhibited his works throughout the world in many different countries. His solo exhibitions, held in Germany, France, England, Switzerland, United States, and Hong Kong have received great reviews. He has achieved recognition and been praised in the highest terms by art lovers from a wide variety of nations and cultural background
